Lydia Schumake

B.E. Academy, Nashville, Tenn.

Lydia Schumake is the founder of B.E. Academy for Girls, a private, all-girls school in Nashville, Tenn., whose mission is to prepare and support students as they transition from dependent learners to independent thinkers. By using a culturally relevant and responsive STEAM approach, B.E. Academy for Girls prepares students with the structural skills, knowledge and social-emotional support to explore college, career or entrepreneurship pathways. Lydia holds a B.A. from Tennessee State University and a master’s in teaching. from Trevecca Nazarene University. She began her teaching career in 2015 and has worked in public (district and charter) and private schools in Nashville. As a mom, educator and Nashvillian, Lydia recognizes the need for a new educational experience for girls in the Nashville community. The name of B.E. Academy pays homage to Lydia’s maternal and paternal grandmothers—Blanche and Effie—and their lifelong work in education.
